Our Pheno Hunting Process

Each year, Humboldt Seed Company leads an extensive pheno hunt throughout Northern California, evaluating thousands of cannabis plants in collaboration with expert cultivators. Spanning several weeks, this large-scale initiative unites growers, breeders, and cannabis advocates to spotlight standout plants that exhibit remarkable characteristics—ranging from rare terpene expressions and vibrant coloration to strong plant structure.

Driven by a shared goal of enhancing cannabis quality and preserving genetic diversity, this hands-on process plays a vital role in our ongoing pursuit of superior genetics adapted to various growing conditions.

Our pheno hunts are designed to uncover plants with reliable genetic stability, natural resilience against pests and diseases, and consistent performance across climates. With a focus on variety at every stage, we develop seeds that meet the high expectations of both professional growers and hobbyists.

2024 Pheno Hunt

Nestled within the rugged landscapes of Northern California, the Emerald Triangle—comprising Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity counties—has long stood as the pinnacle of cannabis cultivation, boasting a legacy that spans half a century. However, as pioneers in the industry, we at Humboldt Seed Company find ourselves at the forefront of a transformative shift. This year, we embarked on a unique journey from the iconic Emerald Triangle to the landscapes northwest of Sacramento, a region earning acclaim as the “Golden Triangle” or the “Emerald Dot.” Join us as we explore the dynamic intersection of tradition and innovation in the world of cannabis cultivation.

Our Seven Day Hunt

During our seven-day pheno hunt, we ventured from the Emerald Triangle to promising territories in Nevada County, Yuba County, Calaveras County, and beyond in search of the finest cannabis genetics. This scientific odyssey took us to farms cultivating our prized genetics, as well as new genetics, where we sifted through dozens, if not hundreds, of plants of the same cultivar, seeking the unicorns.
